Sukenari
Mastering the Art of Traditional Forging and Modern Steel Innovation
Founded in 1933 in Asakusa, Tokyo, Sukenari traces its origins to one of Japan's most vibrant centers of commerce and craftsmanship. At the time, Asakusa was a thriving hub where skilled artisans and traditional techniques shaped everyday tools into works of enduring quality.
In the aftermath of World War II, the founder returned to his hometown in Toyama Prefecture, rebuilding the business in 1945. What began as a necessary restart soon evolved into the foundation of a distinguished knife maker.
Free from the constraints of established blade-making regions, Sukenari developed its own path—blending traditional Japanese forging techniques with a forward-looking spirit of innovation. Today, the company remains family-operated, carrying forward nearly a century of dedication to craftsmanship.

While deeply rooted in the traditions of Japanese blade making, Sukenari is equally renowned for pushing the boundaries of performance. The company is one of the few manufacturers capable of successfully forging extremely high-performance steels such as ZDP-189, HAP40, SG2 (R2), and other advanced powder metallurgy steels—materials that many makers consider too difficult to work with.

Sukenari is also widely respected for its mastery of Mizu-Honyaki, one of the most demanding forging techniques in Japanese knife making. Similar to traditional Japanese sword forging, a single piece of high-carbon steel is clay-coated and water-quenched to produce exceptional hardness while maintaining resilience. The distinctive hamon created through this process reflects both technical mastery and artistic beauty.
Every Sukenari knife is created with precision, consistency, and an uncompromising commitment to performance. Their knives are trusted by professional chefs around the world who demand outstanding edge retention, excellent cutting feel, and long-term reliability.
