Sharpening and restoration requests can be submitted directly through our website.

To provide an initial estimate, please send us the following information:

• Type of knife
• Blade length
• Approximate blade width
• Any chips, damage, excessive wear, or deformation
• Whether the blade is bent or warped
• Clear photos of both sides of the entire blade
• Close-up photos clearly showing any damage or areas of concern

For bent or warped blades, please include photos taken from an angle that clearly shows the condition.

Based on the information and photographs provided, we can give you an initial estimated cost before you send your knife to us.

Send or Bring Your Knife to YAMANI.

If you would like to proceed, you can then send your knife to us for a full physical inspection.

Once the knife is in our hands, we can assess details that cannot always be determined from photographs alone and confirm the work required before proceeding.

Every knife is approached individually. We do not believe in simply sharpening the edge and returning the knife when its geometry, profile, or condition requires further attention.

YAMANI’s sharpening and restoration service is based on the traditional geometry, construction, and sharpening principles of authentic Japanese knives.

For this reason, we generally do not accept imitation Japanese-style knives or these Japanese-style blades that clearly do not follow traditional Japanese construction and geometry.

This may include:

• Single-bevel knives made without a proper ura-suki (hollow-ground back)
• Knives that appear to be single-bevel but are manufactured or ground more like double-bevel knives.
• Japanese-style knives whose original geometry differs significantly from traditional Japanese knife construction
• Blades that have been severely altered through incorrect manufacturing or previous sharpening

Restoring such knives to proper traditional geometry can require extensive correction, removal of significant material, and many hours of work. In some cases, the original construction simply does not allow a proper restoration. For these reasons, we generally decline such sharpening and restoration requests.

When purchasing a Japanese knife, we strongly recommend choosing a trusted and knowledgeable source rather than making a decision based on price alone.

A genuine, properly made Japanese knife is not defined simply by its appearance or by the words “Japanese style.” Its construction, geometry, craftsmanship, and the traditions behind its making all matter.

Choosing the right knife from a reliable source is the first step toward proper sharpening, long-term maintenance, and a lifetime of use.
